Pinon Colorado is often used as a protection from negative energies or “panema” bad luck. The elemental essence of this plant is fire and for this reason must be respected. Like fire it has the energy to transform the energy in the body to a more useful and helpful state but can also be destructive if not respected. This is a great teacher for those who are lacking a voice in thier life and currently unable maintain healthy boundaries with others.
There are many substances in Jatropha gossypiifolia: plant alkaloid – atropine, curcin (trunk), plant lipid – sitosterol (bark), unsaturated ketone – jatrophone (root), as well as glycoproteins, lectin proteins, polyunsaturated esters. The seeds of the plant contain palmitic, linoleic and oleic acids, and the leaves contain apigenin, isovitexin, lignan, etc. Because of this, Piñon Colorado has a huge range of healing properties: it is no coincidence that in Mexico it is also called Curatodo (from Spanish cura todo – literally «heals everything»). Almost all parts of this plant are used as raw materials for the preparation of medicines. For example, the resin released after tearing off a leaf or when the trunk is cut has healing, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Leaves and seeds are used as an emetic and laxative, as well as for the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases (including gastritis) and even neoplasms. The plant is a part of many medicinal decoctions – both as the main active agent and as an auxiliary.

Plant Spirit Medicine is a form of spiritual remediation rooted in ancestral traditions that combines classical Chinese~ Five Element theory, the indigenous practice of calling upon plant spirits, and the Animism religion (the attribution of a soul to plants, inanimate objects, and natural phenomena.) Plant Spirit Medicine recognizes that like humans, plants have spirit, and their spirit has the unique capacity to touch and rebuild the spirit of a human being and restore us to our own essential nature. Our ancestors lived this way–-an existence in which there is no illusion of separation from nature. They would make friends with the spirits of nature and call upon them for restoration and other everyday affairs. This ancient practice was remembered, revitalized, and reintroduced by the late teacher and healer, Eliot Cowan, and has proven to be as effective in today’s world as in times past. Modern people are once again turning to plants for guidance and for their ability to regenerate spirit.
